Recommended Reading Three of Georges Simenon's books to try: Get a Copy Maigret and the Headless Corpse: Commissaire Maigret sets about the case in his characteristically unhurried manner. The (depending on who is counting) 47th of 75 Maigret novels. (Review) ★★★★ Get a Copy The Stain on the Snow: One of Simenon's "romans durs" or hard novels. Horrific cruelty and pointless, inexplicable violence. Not for the faint-hearted. (Notes) Get a Copy My Friend Maigret: Maigret teams up with Inspector Pyke of Scotland Yard. The 31st and many argue the best Maigret. It has been televised twice. (Notes) Image by Erling Mandelmann Biography Georges Simenon was born in … [Read more...] about Georges Simenon

Strangers on a Train
Notes Strangers on a Train by Patricia Highsmith is the story of a chance meeting and the bizarre events it triggers. The plotline has been copied many times, but not with Highsmith's brand of desperation, guilt and fear. Like many of Patricia Highsmith's books, the novel deals with themes of obsession and homosexuality. Alfred Hitchcock's portrayal of the story became a classic film thriller and propelled Highsmith's writing career. Get a Copy Publisher's synopsis "For eliciting the menace that lurks in familiar surroundings, there's no one like Patricia Highsmith." ―Time The world of Patricia Highsmith has always been filled with ordinary people, all of whom are capable of very ordinary crimes. The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling
The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling by Lawrence Block was the third in his Bernie Rhodenbarr series. Bernie is an urbane burglar, owner of an antiquarian bookstore and amateur sleuth who finds himself framed for murder. An easy-going humorous read with a seventies New York vibe, though a little too rambling and bookish for my taste. The novel won the inaugural Nero Award. Get a Copy ★★★ Publisher's Synopsis Best-selling author Lawrence Block will keep you hooting with laughter as you follow the hilarious hijinks of his incorrigible character, Bernie Rhodenbarr: notorious burglar and part-time sleuth. Trying to go legit, Bernie has taken over a secondhand bookstore in Greenwich Village, but he still … [Read more...] about The Burglar Who Liked to Quote Kipling
The Forgotten Dead
Notes The Forgotten Dead by Tove Alsterdal is her first novel. It starts in Tarifa in southern Spain. A place where it isn’t so rare for a body to wash up on a beach. Originally penned as a screenplay, the producers thought it would be too expensive to film as it spans seven countries. Following its success as a novel, it is being developed into a six-part mini-series. It is incredible what popularity does for a producer’s perspective of cost. A book with a startling ending. Get a Copy ★★★★ Publisher's Synopsis Into the darkness they fall… Tarifa, Spain. A man’s body washes up on the beach. No-one seems to care. Patrick Cornwall is a highly acclaimed investigative journalist. His latest project: to … [Read more...] about The Forgotten Dead
